Chess board editor
Copy any chess position in seconds: drag and drop the pieces, or pick a piece and click the squares. Set who moves next and the castling rights, copy the FEN, then analyze the position with Stockfish.
How to use the board editor
1. Place the pieces: drag them from the palettes, or click a piece and then the squares. Clear board starts from an empty board, Starting position from the initial setup.
2. Choose the side to move and the castling rights. Castling is only offered when the king and the rook stand on their original squares.
3. Click Analyze this position to see the best moves, or copy the FEN to use the position elsewhere. To copy a board from a picture, use Import screenshot and fix any misread piece in the editor.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I set up a position on the chess board editor?
Drag pieces from the palettes above and below the board onto any square. To place many pieces quickly, click a piece in the palette, then click every square where it goes. Start from an empty board with Clear board, or from the starting position and remove what you do not need.
- How do I remove a piece?
Drag it off the board, right-click it, or select the eraser and click the squares to empty.
- How do I get the FEN of my position?
The FEN field under the controls updates with every change. Copy it from there, or paste a FEN into it to load a position on the board.
- Can I analyze the position after setting it up?
Yes. Click Analyze this position: the position opens on the analysis board and Stockfish lists the three best moves with their evaluation. You can then play moves, explore master games and export a PGN.
- Why is the Analyze button disabled?
The position must be legal: one king per side, no pawn on the first or last rank, at most 8 pawns and 16 pieces per side, and the side that just moved cannot be in check. The message under the button tells you what to fix.
- Is the chess board editor free?
Yes, it is free, works without an account and runs on desktop and mobile.
