How Hunting Analysis Works

The methodology behind ChessHunter's matchup reports

Overview

A Hunting Analysis is a comparative matchup report between two players. Unlike generic player profiles, it answers a specific question: where do YOUR strengths line up against YOUR OPPONENT's weaknesses?

The result is an actionable game plan with specific openings to steer toward, tendencies to exploit, and patterns to be aware of.

Step 1: Data Collection

When you start a Hunting Analysis, ChessHunter fetches the latest game histories for both players from all available platforms:

  • Chess.com — Recent games across all time controls (bullet, blitz, rapid, daily) via the Chess.com public API.
  • Lichess — Recent games across all time controls and variants via the Lichess public API.
  • FIDE / OTB — Over-the-board game data from the GigaBase database, synced regularly. Includes classical and rapid tournament games.

Game histories are always fetched fresh at analysis time — never from cache — so you get the most up-to-date picture of both players.

Step 2: Repertoire Extraction

For each player, ChessHunter builds a repertoire profile by parsing all collected games:

  • Opening frequencies — Which openings does each player play as White and Black, and how often?
  • Win/draw/loss rates — Performance breakdown per opening, per color, per time control.
  • Style tags — Behavioral patterns detected from game data (e.g. “Aggressive attacker”, “Endgame grinder”, “Time pressure prone”).
  • Recent form — Performance trend over the last 30 days compared to longer-term averages.

Step 3: Comparative Matching

This is the core of the Hunting Analysis. The engine overlays both repertoires to find mismatches:

  • Opening Mismatch Map — Openings where you perform well and your opponent struggles. These are the openings to steer toward.
  • Danger Zones — Openings where your opponent excels and you underperform. These are lines to avoid or prepare extra.
  • Style Clashes — How your playing style interacts with theirs. If you're a sharp tactician and they crumble under pressure, the report highlights that.

Step 4: Game Plan Generation

The final output is a structured game plan that includes:

  • Recommended openings to play as White and Black against this specific opponent
  • Key positions and transpositions to aim for
  • Opponent tendencies to exploit (time management, endgame patterns, blunder rates)
  • Danger lines to avoid or prepare with extra care
  • Downloadable PGN files of relevant games for further study

Optionally, AI-generated strategic commentary adds narrative context to the data, explaining why certain openings are favorable and how to approach the middlegame.

Data Freshness & Caching

  • Game histories are never cached. Every analysis fetches the latest games directly from Chess.com and Lichess.
  • FIDE ratings and player metadata are synced daily from the official FIDE database.
  • The final analysis result is cached for 24 hours per player pair. If both players' game histories haven't changed, the cached result is served. Otherwise, a fresh analysis runs.
  • OTB game data is updated when new GigaBase releases are available (typically monthly).

Limitations

  • Analysis quality depends on the number of games available. Players with fewer than 10 games on a platform may produce less reliable patterns.
  • Private or deleted games on Chess.com/Lichess are not accessible.
  • OTB data coverage varies by federation — some smaller federations report fewer games to FIDE.
  • Style tags are statistical indicators, not certainties. A player tagged “Time pressure prone” may have improved their clock management recently.
